FARM Splendid pastures sheltered by many fine timber belts characterise the well-managed farm of Messrs Whewell Bros., of Tainahere. A precursory examination is enough to satisfy the visitor that this farm of 400 acres is managed on sound progressive lines and that, its owners fully believe in Hie most modern methods of farming for the obtaining of optimum results. It is perhaps as breeders of Friesian cattle that the name of Whewell Bros, is best known for their Braeken Stud was founded three years before the advent of the first Friesian Stud book in 1911. Bracken Friesians have been shown with outstanding success at the principal shows in the province, one of the present herd matrons being a former North Island champion and the winner of the 100-guinea gold nip at tin* Royal, while the senior herd sire was champion at the ISo>al Show in Auckland in 193 i. The farm at presenj is e irrying I iOO ewes besides the 120 head of cattle, pigs and several horses. Messrs Whewell Bros, have been breeders of stud Soiithdowns for many years, the Mock being founded in ID .'IS with the sire Lake Farm L 3. The entire Pukenguhu Stud from Mr A. L. Bremer, of llawera, was purchased and this will comprise a notable addition to the stud sheep already on the farm Other activities on Messrs Whewell Bros.’ farm include the fattening of cattle and highly satisfactory prices have been obtained for choice beef cattle produced on the farm. Five young stud bulls will be offered for Sale at the Combined Breeders' Annual Sale, Hamilton. September 20, 21 and 22, by the stud’s proved sires from tested dams. AYRSHIRES AND CLYDESDALES HIGH-PRODUCING STUD The great performance of Ayrdale Rosie, who on group H.T. this season promises to finish with 887 lb fat, draws special attention to the Third Part Ha stud of Mr W. C. Wallace, Fencourt, Cambridge, for it was there that Rosie's sire, Third Part Ha First Choice, was bred. Not only is he the sire of Rosie, but he has long since distinguished himself through being the first Ayrshire surveyed sire, 3i daughters having a then average of 325 on Group H.T., an average which has since been considerably increased. Third Part Ha First Choice was by Ivanhoc Boomerang, sire of most of the older members of Mr Wallace's herd, including the great cow Third Part Ha Minnie, group H.T. 473 lb fat in 210 days, winner of many championships and reserve at the 1938 Royal. A paternal sister to Minnie was champion at Te Awamutu, and a full sister champion as only a two-year-old at Hamilton. The half-sister referred to. Third Part Ha Dorothy, has already produced 173 lbs fat in her first three months on group lI.T. With the many splendid daughters of Ivanhoe Boomerang, Mr Wallace is using his excellent imported bull, itreenail ltarascope, who boasts a pedigree in which every female ancestor has tested over 4 per cent, iI is sire is by a son of l.cssm ssock Sunny .1 im from a grand-daiigbtei* of Nctlierlon Blood Royal, with a record of 12.7 lu lbs milk i.2S test) in 45 weeks. BarascopCs dam is one of 32 high testing, recorded daughters of Netherton Ma/.eppa. whose dam Torrs Mischif, was considered one of the best rows ever seen in Scotland. The imported bull was champion at Cambridge and Te Awamutu, and reserve at the Royal, where his first progeny were first in bull calves and second in heifer calves. The Third Part Ha herd is a singlarly even one with an enviable slmwring record, while it readies a high average of production, group H.T. figures ranging from 300 lbs to upward of 500 lbs fat.
