TE AWAMUTU

WAIPA COUNTY COUNCIL CLEARING OF RAGWORT (Special to Times) TE AWAMUTU, Monday Reporting on ragwort clearing in the Waipa .County at today's meeting of the Waipa County Council, the inspector (Mr G. M. Wall) said that the position was such that one gang should he able to handle the work for another month or six weeks. Fifty tons of fime and sodium had been mixed, 10 being sold from the depot. Answering a question, Mr Wall said that prospects for the coming season were fairly good. Two years ago the council asked the Government to make four or five gangs available but now only one was required. More would be required for the summer. Under Scheme 13 work could possibly be done on the farms but just now the scheme was restricted to individual farms. Mr G. A. Clarke was of the opinion that a scheme could be devised for gangs to work under the inspector’s supervision, and it should have satisfactory results. His idea was to enlarge the county scheme to deal with all noxious weeds wherever they might be. Mr Wall said that in some places labour could be made available for clearing road frontages with advantage to the owner and the local body. It was decided on the chairman’s suggestion that the inspector formulate a scheme and put it before the Minister of Agriculture, the Hon. W. Lee Martin. The secretary-manager stated that he had supplied the information and whs awaiting a reply to a request for certain information which the board would require. The illegality of same consumers effecting alterations and making installations themselves was mentioned. It was stressed that there was a considerable danger to life and property as a result of amateur work. The dej tection of faulty work was the object 9 of re-inspections. _ The engineer's report and estimate , for the Pirongia-Kawhia line was [ j adopted. Provision was made for the ] main line and about 14 miles of sub- . j sidiarv lines. The formal resolution j for the loan of £28,000 was adopted, ’ there being no objections. 1 j Milking Shed Installations 1 | ! j Mr Sutherland brought forward a ! : motion, of which notice had been ’! given, referring to the provision of 1 hot water in milking sheds. He said ’ i that some installations were not t i adequate. A GOO-wat installation i ; cost £3, 750-watt £4, and 1000-watt I £5. He thought the charges should I be altered to bring them more into i j conformity with the horse-power 1 ; charges. They would induce dairyi men to install more adequate service l ? | and thus help the cream grading. His j idea was to reduce the charges for the ; bigger services. However, as the j whole question was to be discussed at the annual conferences at Wellfagi ton, he thought that further consideraj tion should be deferred. With regard to the Owairaka Valley, \ the secretary-manager reported that i the board’s inspector had prepared a i special report which showed that the 1 cost would be about £7OO. Revenue | would fall very much below the board's requirement in other cases. Mr Lethbridge said that he would support supply if there were suflicient dairy sheds to warrant the extension, but he agreed that at present the work should not be done.
