A DEADLOCK
"WHISPERING CAMPAIGN” FRONTIERS STRENGTHENED (United Press. Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) LONDON, August 19 The situation in Europe does not favour optimism at the week-end. The Polish Commissioner for Danzig, M. Chodacki, the President of the Danzig Senate, Herr Arthur Greiser, and the League Commissioner, Dr. Burckhardt, discussed the status of Danzig, upon which a deadlock was reached. it is reported that Italy increasingly favours a four-Power conference on the subject, but Germany and Poland are not interested. A message from Basle states that an anti-Swiss “whispering campaign” has begun in Southern Germany, and heavy concentration of troops near Basle has resulted in the strengthening of the Swiss garrisons on the Italian and German frontiers, while all roads and bridges are mined and guarded incessantly. Italian burder garrisons are being strengthened ami troops are moving up to tiie French frontier from Trieste, from Venice and from Milan. German troops are passing across the Brenner Pass to Italy repeatedly, arousing the hostility of the Italian Tyrolese. WORKING FOR PEACE AUSTRALIAN MINISTER’S VIEWS HERR HITLER'S LIMITED TIME (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyrlgtit) MELBOURNE, August 20 The Commonwealth Minister of External Affairs. Sir Henry Gullett, stated today that the Bratislava radio announcement practically meant that the status of Slovakia had become little better than that of Bohemia and Moravia, and it had very little military significance. He added that, in spite of the gravity of the international situation, strong factors ami forces were still working “The dangers of an early outbreak of war,” said Sir Henry, "lies in the very limited lime which remains to Herr Hitler during the European late summer and autumn. “If Herr Hitler Is to strike this year, he will strike now, at any time."
