BOXING TITLES

CLEVER AMATEURS SOUTH AUCKLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS K E F.N L Y - CO N TEST F. I) CL AS S ES With the cream of the boxing talent in the Auckland Province taking part, the South Auckland amateur boxing championships were decided in the Y.M.C.A., Bryce Street, on Saturday under the auspices of the Hamilton Boxing Association. About 70 contestants, drawn from Auckland, Rotorua, the Waikato and the King Country, took part in the tournament and, with the different classes keenly contested, a high standard was witnessed and the fixture was one of the most successful held by the Hamilton Boxing Assoc-iation. The preliminary stages took place in the afternoon and the semi-finals and finals were decided at night. Large attendances were present at both sessions. The South Auckland championships have always been regarded as a forerunner to the provincial tournament and, with a number of new contestants coming forward, more than usual interest was aroused by this year's fixture. The contingent from Auckland was a strong one. but great strides have been made in the Waikato during the last two seasons and the local boxers performed well in all classes. The displays given by several newcomers to the championship fixture auger well for the future of the sport in the Waikato. Most Scientific Boxer The trophy for the most scientific boxer of the tourney was won by J. Jenkins, of Auckland, who went through to win the bantam-weight title. Cool, fast on his feet and precise in his punching, Jenkins gave a good account of himself and his victory was popular with the spectators. Following are the results of the finals of the different classes:— Paper-Weights R. Mclntosh (Auckland), 6st. beat W. Aldred (Auckland., 6st. on points. As usual the paper-weights gave an attractive display of fast hitting, but their performance was not as bright as some of those seen in the same class jn Hamilton earlier in the season. Neither contestant showed much inclination to mix matters, but when they did come together Mclntosh was the cleaner hitter and this undoubtedly gave him the decision. Fly-weights J. Payne (Auckland) 7st. 121 b., beat R. King (Auckland) 7st. 81b., on points. Payne had the advantage of a longer reach, but King fought gamely to overcome this obstacle and placed his body blows with telling effect. His left hook to the body was well delivered and he was quick to follow up as he brought his opponent’s guard down. However, Payne's superior weight stood him in good stead and he won the bout on points. Bantam-weights J. Jenkins (Auckland/ Bst. 51b., beat J. King (Auckland), Bst. 31b., on points. Both bantam-weight finalists fought hard all the way, hut Jenkins had more finish than his opponent and drove his punches home with cool precision. He watched for every opportunity and was not slow to follow up his advantage. Although King fought back hard, he was on the defensive a good deal of the time. Feather-weights L. Pennington Auckland) Bst. 131 b., beat Buster Boyle v Auckland) Sst. 91b., on points. Fast on his feet and throwing punches from all angles, Boyle gave a glimpse of the form that had brougnt him to the front rank in his class. However, Pennington was a good match for him and placed his punches neatly when he took his share of the attack. In the second round he had Boyle worried as, showing line rfngcraft, he forced the fight every minute of the time. In the third round lie was very cool and, while Boyle threw away his chances with rather wild punching, he piled up the points and gained a popular victory. Light-weights B. O'Brien .Hamilton; 9st. 51b.. beat L. Cruickshank Hamilton 9»i. 61b., on points. Both men were obviously very tir-*d after having gone through the earlier stages of the competition and the boul lacked the sparkle that had characterised some of the earlier encounters. Clinching was frequent and the boxe;s were warned by the referee to light. Following this O'Brien forced the going, but Cruickshank fought back solidly. However, O'Brien continued to take the major share of the attack and gained the decision. Welter-weights 11. Robinson (Auckland) lOst. 21b. won by default from W. Little Auck-* land) JOst. 61b. Middle-weights F. Sharpies (Auckland list. 51b., beat M. Ashman (Auckland list. 21b.. on points. Hard hitting from the opening gong characterised the bout and it seemed as though the pace must slacken before long. However, both men were in splendid condition and exchanged two-handed attacks in lino stvle. in the last of the three rounds Sharpies clearly took the lead and his fierce onslaughts kept his opponent on the Following are the results of the elimination bouts:— Fly-weights R. King Auckland, 7st. Sib., beat F. Andrews (Auckland) Bst.. on a technical knockout. Bantam-weights J. King .Auckland/ Bst. 31b., beat O. Jackson (Hamilton, Sst. 41b., on points. K.
