WATERS RECEDE

FLOODS AT MANAWATU HAVOC TO BANKING SYSTEM (Special to Times) PALMERSTON N., Sunday While the llood waters that covercied 9000 acres of the Buckley district last week are receding, it will be some days before the area is clear. As far as the railway is concerned repairs to the track were effected to enable trains to resume running this morning. The llood water is very deep in places and canoes are still being used to bring out cream from the sheds which were fortunate enough to be situated on high ground. A boat is also being used to convey food and mails to isolated settlers. It is dillieult to estimate stock losses at present as the animals are scattered along the roads and stopbanks, where they must remain for some time, and until the water recedes tallies cannot be taken. The llood played havoc with the banking system that has been built up over many years by the farmers of the locality/ The banks have been carried away in places to such an extent that it will require a great deal of work to have them put in order. Cattle in Distress Cattle are in dire distress on account of the silt and water that cover pastures. With the dairying season just beginning the position is a serious one, as the cows are just coming in and they are hard put to it to get food. Many farmers arc running their stock on the highways and in other cases feeding them with some of the hay
