SNUG HARBOUR
The westward stars above us, we turned home, Leaving the wind behind us and the sound Of the sea’s laughter lifted into foam To reach Snug Harbour where no breakers pound Blue into thunder. Suddenly we saw The leeward island and the twinkling town, The headland stretching like a golden paw And the white lighthouse with its gleaming crown. The quiet dusk fell round us as we came Swinging beneath the sunset, drowsily We moved into the harbour lit by flame, Leaving behind the outposts of the sea. The leaping water and the kelp-strewn bars To come to port beneath a cloud of stars. —Harold Vinal.
