SPEED OF THE FUTURE

700 MILES AN HOUR ROYAL AIR FORCE FIGHTERS (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright/ LONDON, July 10 Wind tunnel tests may result in Royal Air Force fighters attaining a speed of 700 miles an hour. An official of the National Physical Laboratory said: “Engine improvements have made possible a speed of 600 miles an hour, if we can reduce the air drag. “We are unable to disclose the seciet of the fastest Royal Air Force aeroplane. but it far exceeds the published figure of 400 miles an hour. “Aeroplanes of the future will be of metal, specially treated to prevent skin friction, which we hope to reduce by 00 to 70 per cent in air tunnel tests, after which speed approaching 700 miles an hour will be within practical reach.”
