IRISH REPUBLICANS CONDEMNATION BY CARDINAL PENALTY OF EX-COMMUNICATION 'United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright LONDON, June 26 Cardinal Hinsley, Roman Catholic Archbishop ol' Westminster, condemning the Irish Republican Army bomb outrages, points out that the penalty for Roman Catholics who plot against Church and State is excommunication. Two civic guards were wounded at Fermoy, County Cork, when a Republican procession clashed with the police, and troops and armoured cars were called out. Later the men barricaded themselves in the college at Listowel and broadcast Republican proclamations, but the police scaled the walls and drove them out. Three hundred policemen prevented thousands of demonstrators making a pilgrimage to Wolfe Tone's grave at Bodenstown, Ireland, and an open-air protest meeting burned the Union Jack in a Dublin street. A lawyer and pdlitician, Thcoboid Wolfe Tone (1703-98), became involved in a political intrigue as secretary of the Catholic Committee. He was alleged to have given information about Ireland to France, and to have urged a French invasion of Ireland. He committed suicide while awaiting execution for treason.

Copyright) ('Received June 27, 3.15 p.m.) LONDON, June 26 The Daily Mail says that five men, believed to be Irish Republicans, drove up in a car, left one on watch, and overpowered a sentry at Fort Southwick, the headquarters of the Royal Engineers’ Survey Company near Portsmouth, and carried him to the guard-room, where they held him down. They wrenched a telephone from its fittings, hut decamped on hearing the approach of other sappers who were attracted by the noise. One rifle is reported to be missing.
