GREAT BATTING

ENGLAND’S TEST TEAM HUTTON 196; COMPTON 120 BIG LEAD ON FIRST INNINGS (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright', (Received June 27. 3.13 p.m.) LONDON, June 26 The English test team secured a big lead over West Indies on the first innings of the first test match at Lord's today when, at the close of the second day, they had scored 404 for five wickets. West Indies, on the first day scored 277 in their first innings. The two previous matches between West Indies and England at Lords resulted in England winning by an innings to spare on each occasion. Although West Indies hold the rubber at present, they have never beaten England in England. Great Batsmen Omitted It is significant of the strength of England’s batting that W. J. Kdrich 219. P. A. Gibb 93, 106, 120, and E. 11. Valentine, who scored 97 and 112 in tests in South Africa recently .are not included in England's team. However the batting proved quite strong enough but as only one more day remains the bowlers will have to be on form to force a win. The batting was much brighter today than on Saturday when only 288 runs were scored. However, England wanted runs at a greater pace to ensure victory. Accurate Bowling The bowling was very accurate and the fielding keen early in the day and Hie partnerships between Hutton and Gimblett and Hutton and Hammond did not produce runs at any pace. Paynter, when he had received a few overs livened up the pace a bit.

Hutton went very carefully and his century occupied 240 minutes, but Compton, after being missed off the first- ball, was quickly in his stride and attained his century in 115 minutes. It was the later part of the partnership between these two young players that made the score board mount at a reasonable rate. They added 248 runs for the fourth wicket. llutton was unfortunate in not reaching his double century. The attendance was 23,000. Details: WEST INDIES First Innings 277 ENGLAND First Innings H.
