APATHY SHOWN
WATTERS OF DEFENCE SMALL CAMBRIDGE MEETING (Special to Times) CAMBRIDGE, Thursday. A measure of apathy towards military service was exemplified last nig/ht when a meeting called to discuss the matter generally had to be abandoned. Despite the fact that the meeting had been well advertised and spoken about, the total attendance numbered 17. and of this number only nine were players of sport. There were four officials of I lie Rugby Union present, and the remainder were the Mayor, Mr Edgar .lames, Mr L>. J. London, president of Ihe local Defence League, !Mr I*. Lewis, secretary uf Ihe league, ; and Mr S. Lewis. : Jn the cours'fe of a short talk among I those present it was generally agreed that if tiie country was to prepare i adequately, compulsory service would j have to he adopted by the Governi merit. It was stated to he evident | that the Governments appeal for voluntary service was a failure. It was also mentioned that the number of enrolments at the Cambridge Post Office was very small.
