WAIKATO RUGBY TEAM TRIAL GAME TO BE HELD SCHEME OF REGULAR TRAINING A former Waikato Rugby representative, Mr 11. P. Ensor, uf Te Awamutu, was elected by the. Waikato Rugby Union last evening as the sole selector of the Waikato Rugby representatives for the 1939 season. The former selector was Mr J. R. McKenzie, of Tamahere.. Mr A. St. C. Belcher (Hamilton, said Mr Ensor was in full accord with the views of the president of the Waikato Rugby L'nion, Mr D. R. F. Campbell, that the Waikato players should be broujght together for training prior to the representative fixtures. He favoured, also, a trial match in the Waikato prior to the first annual fixture against Auckland. Trial Game at Hamilton Arrangements were made for the trial match between two teams from the Waikato to l)e played at Hamilton on May 20. The Waikato fifteen to pj’ay Auckland on June 'J nl Hamilton will be selected by Mr Ensor after the trial game. Following the final selection of the Irani the players will enter a campaign ol' week-end training under the direction of the selector. The Waikato Union will bear ail reasonable costs of transport for the training and assembling of the Waikato learn. Transport arrangement for practices will be made by a player's sub-union. Messrs Belcher and D. Bourke were appointed managers of Hie two trial teams. Mr Belcher said Mr Ensor desired all clubs to have their senior players allocated definite individual numbers this season and requested the players l<> wear them in every match so that Ihe selector's Risk would he easier. Further, the selector requested each club in the Waikato to forward to the secretary of the Waikato Union the age, height and weight of every senior forward. Question of Sub-Seicctors Mr Eiisor's nomination came following a decision of the union to have a sole selector. 'The nomination was made by Mr Sinclair Waipa,, who cuiu lie had no desire to cast retleclious upon the abinty of the former selector. Mr Ensor was capable of filling and willing to fill the position (R sole selector. The nomination was seconded by Mr J. E. Barker (Matamata). Mr J. D. Hislop Hamilton) was of Ibe opinion that a sole selector, who could not possibly be in every corner ol‘ the Waikato each week, should have the assistance of sub-selectors in each sub-union. lie moved that Hie selectors of eacli sub-union should l)e appointed to co-operate with Mr Ensor. Mr C. 11. Mclntyre Morrinsville) said selectors usually chose some per- , son in the various sub-unions to watch players on their behalf. Mr ilislop’s motion was lost. A resolution of appreciation of Mr McKenzie’s services was carried.
