The Permanent Committee on Geographical Names for British Official Use is the title of the body. As the Government's “official spellers” their job is to decide doubtful points about the spelling of place names. Some 38 lists of foreign placenames have been issued by the Committee from its headquarters at the Royal Geographical Society in Kensington Gore, S.W. Lists are compiled in accordance with the principle that “the name used by the local authority shall constitute the principal entry, under which information is to be gathered, provided that, should the place also be known by a well-established conventional name, that name shall also appear as an entry.” An official of the Committee said to the News Chronicle yesterday; “The Committee does not decide that a name must be spelt in a certain way. We put forward what we consider to be the best spelling for British use.**
