Children’s Verses

LOST LAMB I lost my lamb in the evening And I could not find him again, And I looked in the cowshed and barnyard, And then it began to rain. I feared that he might be lonely And so I looked again. I found my lamb in the morning Before my breakfast came, And 1 gave him a serious warning, Uut—l led him all the same. THE SKYLARK Why does the skylark sing at dawn As upwards she is winging? Does early morning hold "a charm That makes for sweeter singing? And for what reason does she fly So far beyond our vision? Does morning see the skylark On a very special mission? I think it doe-s. for I have heard That though the skylark uses The earth below to lay her eggs For safety’s sake she chooses To make a nest within the sky, Secure from prying strangers, Where she can keep her baby larks And know they’re free from dangers. THE SEASIDE DOG He flies across the yellow sands, He grabs the pebble from your hands: He s ready for a thousand larks—lie barks, and barks, and barks and barks! He digs a hole with grunts and growls. He worries all the bathing towels; He swims when he's not wanted to, And shakes himself all over you. He flicks the sand into the tea. He hangs his tongue out thirstily; And most of all he just adores fo wipe on you his sandy paws! Once Daddy said, “ He'd belter stay At homo, I think, this Saturday; And so, although ’twas rather hard, W e shut him up inside the yard.
