FINANCIAL POSITION

(To the Editor) Sir, —Mr Adam Hamilton, the leader of the National Party, is greatly perturbed at the reticence of the Government to disclose its financial proposals. Mr Hamilton, and those he and his party represent, should be thankful for the silence, for if they knew more they would probably suffer prematurely from insomnia. 1 have an inkling that when they receive their income tax demands they will have some cause for perturbation, for, unless rumour is a lying jade, these will in some cases represent a 100 per cent rise.—l am, etc., GOOD TIME COMING. Hamilton, April 18. POSITION IN SPAIN (To the Editor) Sir, —First then, the democracies after betraying Spain are forced to recognise a hostile Franco. The Dictator celebrated the recognition by seizing two British ships, and three others surrendered unconditionally. Thus Chamberlain, further embarassed, withheld the news from the public for a period of 12 days. The position of Britain regarding Spain is somewhat fantastic for we find Italy is well entrenched in Spain, and Franco is paying special attention to the Rock, whilst John Bull is shouting slogans of disapproval. Neither intrigues nor acclamations of approval, nor stupid slogans of disapproval, nor political confusion of the issues, nor misrepresentation, plus a conspiracy of silence, can stay the onward march of Fascism. —I am, etc., HARRY WOODRUFFE. Auckland, April 18.
