AUTUMN BLOOMS

CHRYSANTHEMUM SHOW HAMILTON SOCIETY’S DISPLAY HIGH STANDARD OF ENTRIES Despite the recent prolonged dry spell, which had a most unfavourable effect upon gardens, there was a wonderful display of blooms for the Hamilton Horticultural chrysanthemum and late autumn show which opened in the Alexandra Hall to-day. There was an increase of 2 4 in the entries compared with last year and a very high standard was shown in all sections. Exhibits came from ail parts of the Waikato and from as far as Thames. Pride of place was taken by a magnificent display of chrysanthemums but hardly less striking were the dahlia classes, which, for so late in the year were of remarkably fine quality. Cut flowers and berries once again provided the show with one of its most attractive features and as usual the decorative classes were outstanding. With the show close to Anzac Day a competition was included for floral emblems suitable for that occasion and a number of carefully worked and thoughtfully designed entries were benched. Girl Guides of the Hamilton company made a fine showing in their special section while a most impressive display came from the gardening circle of the Hamilton Lyceum Club. The show will continue until tomorrow evening, and is the last of the society's season. Chrysanthemums, dahlias and cut flowers were Judged by Mr A. J. Shailer, of Palmerston North, and the decorative classes by Mrs C. Downes, of Te Awamutu. This afternoon keen interest was taken in the show by the public, attendance being good despite the unfavourable weather. The Hamilton Chrysanthemum Cup, presented by Dr. F. D. Pinfold for the best entry in the section for 12 varieties, one bloom of each, was won by Mr R. Twentyman, of Thames. Champion Blooms Chrysanthemums. Champion of champions : Mr R.
