ACCUSED IN THE PIHA CASE

BOTH COMMITTED FOR TRIAL DETECTIVES DESCRIBE INVESTIGATIONS (By Tel.—Times Special Reporter) AUCKLAND, Wednesday Occupying two full days, the Lower Court hearing of the charges against Gordon Robert McKay (43), alias Tom Bowlands, wool and skin dealer, and James Arthur Talbot (38), labourer, both Australians, was completed before Mr C. R. Orr Walker, S.M. last evening at 6 o’clock. Pleading not guilty, the accused were committed for trial to the Supreme Court session at Auckland which opens next month. McKay and Talbot were jointly charged with improperly interfering with a dead human body, that of Patrick Henry Shine, at Auckland on February 10, and wdth wilfully setting fire to the dwelling house of Florence Jessie Thomas, thereby committing arson at Piha on February 12. Mr R. J. C. Sanderson appeared for McKay and Mr J. Terry for Talbot. Detective-Sergeant P. J. Nalder prosecuted. Yesterday’s evidence comprised chiefly that given by the Government analyst, medical men and the detectives engaged on the case.
