Taranaki Memorial

An unusual centenary memorial is proposed by the New Plymouth Borough Council, which has obtained a report on the replacement of the Maori carved pole which stood for years beyond ttie eastern boundary of the borough as a memento of the efforts of the Maoris to check the spread of European settlement to lands allot led to the natives by Governor Fitzroy in 1845. Known as Pou Tutaki, meaning “locking up,” the pole was a typical example of Taranaki Maori art. which had 'its own peculiar characteristics. It stood until 1870.
