SCHOOL ATHLETICS WAIKATO SECONDARY SPORTS HAMILTON HIGH'S FINE RECORD For the first time since the inauguration of the sports, seven years ago, Hamilton High School were defeated for the Waikato secondary schools’ senior athletic championship, conceding the title to Thames High School, when the annual fixture was held at Hincmoa Park yesterday. Nor did the local High School fill second place, Hamilton Technical defeating them by three points. It was a Stirling contest amongst the three schools, the relay deciding the fate of the title and in this event the, excitement of the spectators was at. o high pitch. The relay was the final event on the programme and prior to its decision. Thames were leading with 2 1 points with Hamilton High 2 1 and Hamilton Technical (16) second and third respectively. The big race carried with it 10 points for the winning team. Thames i gained the lead early from Technical | and Hamilton High were well out of j the running until the second lap of ! 220 yards when they forged ahead. I However, they could not hold the adI vantage and in the final sprint they | were overtaken by Technical and : Thames, the former securing the clej cision with Thames second and Hamilton High third, great was the interest in the relay that at the completion of the final lap, hundreds of schoolboys surged towards the finishing mark to cheer their various teams as they raced down the straight. Intermediate Title ! Although Hamilton High were dei prived of their traditional first place i in the senior contest they annexed the j intermediate with little difficulty. They | gained three firsts, including the relay, ] three seconds and a third to compile 129 points. Thames 22 were second and Hamilton Technical 19 third, j With two firsts, two seconds and a i third. Hamilton Technical won the 1 junior championship. securing 22 i points against Hamilton High's 20 and Te Aroha's 13. 1 Hamilton High were deprived of the junior championship, being disqualified in the relay for over-carrying the baton. The team appeared to have gained first place and were credited with a record. However, when the matter was referred to the referee he decided to disqualify the winning team and Technical were placed first, Te \mha second and Huntly third.
