GAMING LAW BROKEN
TOBACCONIST FINED £2B “THE MAN BEHIND THE SCENES" (By Telegraph.—Press Association) \\ LLLINGTON, Wedue bday Archibald More Merrilees, of Pet one, a tobacconist, was fined £25 for keeping premises as a common gaming house. There was talk during the hearing of “ the man behind the scenes ” and of the public expecting tobacconists to act for them. The magistrate said the police could not be criticised for enforcing the provisions of the Act. Defendant certainly had appeared twice previously on similar charges, and where Uii* was the case he was prepared to consider a prison sentence in future. The material in the shop, it was state, showed that bets totalling £7B were taken over the taster period.
