THE RACING WORLD

GOSSIP FROM ALL PARTS splendid fields, the best reoponse received in recent years, have come forward for opening day, Friday, of the Whangarei Racing Club's autumn meeting. Form of Midland Midland failed to make any impression in the hack six on the latter day at Avondale but on the way he shaped at the Bay of Plenty meeting there is every reason to anticipate that lie may make amends at the Whangarei fixture this week. Waikato Racing Club Nominations for all events of Waikato Racing Club's winter meeting, at Te Rapa on May 20 and 22, close on Friday, April 2*. with Messrs Blomfleld and Co., Shortland street, Auckland, at 5 p.m. and with the secretary (Mr E. 11. O'Mearal, P.O. Box 351, Hamilton, at 8 p.m. Was Finishing On Bronze Moth was finishing on attractively in the Dominion Handicap at Avondale and the Bronze Eagle would appear to be approaching his best. He was well hack in the middle stages of the running and gave the impression that more handily placed at the home turn he may have provided sterner opposition. Vaalstar Prevails Prior to his achievement on the second day at Avondale when he finished solidly to win the novice event Vaalstar had repeatedly shown promise on the tracks at Takanini and now that he appears to have come right further success should be in store for this attractive-looking son of Vaals. Royal Fawkgs Checked Royal Fawkes, the favourite on either machine in the Dominion Handicap at Avondale on Monday, did well to beat all but Vaalstar and Bronze Emerald in that he met with a check in the middle stages of the race and had to make up leeway in the straight to get within striking distance of the leaders. An Improved Showing

May Song gave her best exhibition fOf some considerable time when she ran Bronwen to a neck in the Waitaker°.i Handicap at Avondale and as she has run her best races when the going is on the easy side she will need only to maintain her present condition to extend her account during the winter months.

Prospects of Tosh Tosh bore out the good impression he made on the tracks prior to his departure for Feilding when on the second day there he scored narrowly but convincingly from Florence Mills and Ecstatic. Tosh Is in splendid trim at present and if taken through tc "Whangarei, as is intended, he should pay expenses on the trip. His early brilliance will stand to him on the turning course there.

Raco Camp Among the interesting acceptors for the first day of the Whangarei meeting is the recent addition to the Williams stable. Race Camp, who, at the Ngaruavvahia picnic meeting - signalled his change of ownership by winning the Hack Cup in attractive style. He appears among the entry for the Maungatapere Hack, of 7* furlongs, and will not lack a following on the machines. Jack Tar’s Credentials Jack Tar made up ground over the final furlong of the Morningside Handicap to be right up third on the post and but for being checked somewhat on a couple of occasions during the early running he may have carried the day. His third under the circumstances was highly meritorious and he should soon make amends. He is an acceptor for the Waipu Handicap on Igriday at Whangarei and should make a bold showing.

By "Martian."

Silver Cloud Silver Cloud drew attention to her immediate prospects by the manner in which she was finishing on the first day at Avondale to win the Rosebank Handicap. It ‘was by far her best exhibition to date and in her present condition she would appear to possess good prospects of continuing her winning way in Whangarei engagements. On the first day she is an acceptor for the Portland Hack and though rehandicapped to 8.3 she may be difficult to dispose of again. Battled on Well Inver gave his best performance for some time when he battled on over the concluding stages of the Morningside Handicap to run the favourite, Ivar, to a neck. Always handily placed he showed greater determination than usual by sticking on resolutely when the pressure was applied. Inver is to contest, the open mile on the first day of the Whangarei and a line through Monday's running would indicate an excellent chance for the Iliad horse. Agog Makes Amends Agog made full amends for Ellerslie and ITrst-day running when he finished on to outstay Airam over the last furlong of the Hobsonville Hurdles at Avondale on Monday. A good jumper. Agog would appear to have a useful future in the new sphere selected for him. Early in the running he was well back but when kicked up to his work he responded in solid style and three furlongs from home was right behind Airam. From then on he moved through and taking the measure of Airam at the distance carried on for a merited victory. A Likely Improver Among the likely improvers engaged on the first day of the Whangarei meeting is the Hunting Song mare, Blonde Princess, who raced consistently hut somewhat unluckily on cither day at Avondale. A close fourth on opening day, she again finished up right behind the placed division on Monday, weakening only in the last little hit after following Te Takina and Bronwen into the straight. Racing at Avondale should effect improvement in her condition and she may be seen to better advantage in Whangarei engagements. Gorato at Whangarei Corato did not fulfil his engagement among the sprinters the first day at Avondale, the explanation made, when he was withdrawn at 2.30 p.m. on the day of the race, being that the lloat he was travelling in had broken down at Ellerslie. Corato, who won attractively in heavy going at New Plymouth last month, is due to make a reappearance among the sprinters at Whangarei on Friday and interest will attach to his showing, especially in the event of rain being experienced in the interim. A Unique Race Meeting A race meeting, unique in many respects, will be staged at Otorohanga on May 27, when a varied programme of twelve events will be run. Horses entered for the various races must be trained and ridden by other, than licensed trainers, jockeys or those connected with the professional side of the sport and horses that have raced at totalisator meetings will not be eligible to compete. The distances of the various races will he from half-a-mile to a mile and include a cigar and umbrella race, a drovers’ race and pony races for boys and girls.
