MONTHLY MEETING

HAMILTON BRANCH NATIONAL COUNCIL OF WOMEN The monthly meeting of the Hamilton branch of the National Council of Women was held recently in the Lyceum Club with the President, Dr. do la Mare, in the chair. Before the meeting - began, membeis stood in silence as a tribute to the memory of Mrs Fraer, a prominent, member of the Christchurch branch, who pissed away last month. Mrs Fr; ei was a former Dominion president and the only woman member of the Prisons Board.

After the conclusion of the routine business, a letter was received from the League of Nations Union reporting the result of the public meeting held in Hamilton recently in connection with the refugee problem. The National

Council of Women was asked to elect a delegate to serve on the committee set up to deal with the question and Mrs I). Mclntosh was elected unanimously.

A letter was read from the Left Book club containing the following resolution, which has been sent, to the Government: “That in order to restore international law and order, and prevent the expansion of Fascist aggression, a conference of democratic powers, including Great Britain, France, U.S.S.R. and U.S.A. be called, in order to define some policy to achieve that end, and to ask for New Zealand representation at the conference.” It was proposed that a similar resolution be forwarded to the Dominion Executive by the National Council of Women and the honorary secretary was instructed to do this.

Letters were also read from the Dominion secretary giving,a report of the Dominion Executive meeting in Christchurch, and from Mrs Freeman, 13. A., who recently lectured in Hamilton, stressing her sympathy with the idea of a conference of the democratic nations being called to try and improve international conditions in the interests of peace. Before the meeting closed the chairman read extracts from a letter received by her as representative of the International Council of Women Cinema Committee and brought to the notice of the branch the number of international bodies represented on the New Zealand National Council of Women. The valuable experiments carried out at the Peckham Lido and the Slough Community Centre in England and the splendid work being done there were also described to the great interest of the branch members.
