STRIKE THREATENED

DUNEDIN CITY TRAMWAYS DEPARTMENT INTERVENES (By Telegraph.—Press Association! DUNEDIN, Tuesday The stoppage of all city trams was threatened last evening following a dispute over a new time-table but at the last moment the union intimated that a stop-work meeting had been abandoned. The tramways committee will meet the men this morning. It is understood a delicate situation was averted as the result of departmental intervention. During the afternoon. Mr .1. <. Hunter, of the Labour Department. Wellinsrton, arrived by plane, conveying a message from the Minister of Labour, the Hon. P. CWebb, that the Government would view gravely persistence in the strike intention but the Government was prepared to do what it could tor the men. The union's grievance is that the new service is too fast, increased motor traffic preventing the ears runnins to time and also giving no spare time between runs and cutting down meal time. Mr Hunter will attend the meeting this morning. The conference this morning was one of some duration, but all the points at issue were fully discussed and all misunderstandings removed. The conference was characterised by the best of feeling on both sides.
