April 17 It is understood that Rear-Admiral Byrd and Mr Lincoln Ellsworth have been asked to consult the Government concerning plans for an official expedition to the South Polar regions. In order to fasten down American claims to potential resources in the region for which an international race Is flevcloping. A prominent member of the Government explained that “sooner or later there must be a conference to settle the question of international claims in the region. Britain, Germany. France, Norway and virtually every other nation are claiming something. The State Department has never recognised the claims, and we want to fasten down our Jurisdiction and obtain ail possible data on the matter." In an interview Admiral Byrd said the summer of 1940 would be the mest practical season for the proposed expedition.
