Votes of sympathy were passed to the relatives of the late Mr Given, or Walton, and to those of the late Mrs F Hall also or Walton. Advice was received from Mr W. S. Goosman, M.P., that ti— Public Works Department would probably be willing to j subsidise the county’s water reticulation i scheme. A water scheme in course or construction on the Hnuraki Plains was at present being- subsidised. It was decided to forward an application for a subsidy as soon as possible The council considered that a water scheme similar to that proposed would have been a great boon to the district this season, as very little rain had fallen in the area affected during- the past three months. Scheme No. 13 A circular letter was received Trom the Department or Labour stating- negotiations were at present under way for the transfer or Scheme 1:i workers into manufactunrig- and other industries, but in the meantime it had been decided to continue temporarily beyond March 31 those approved works which were current at the rime. Applocations Tor subsidies on new works could still be accepted in the meantime. The Public Works Department, Paeroa, wrote stating- that the Main Highways Board had passed a resolution empowering the board delegates to the local bodies to control wandering stock on the main highways in their respective districts, such power to include the appointment or rangers, on the understanding that the delegates did not involve the board in the payment or any remuneration Tor ranging. Local bodies might retain any revenue from impounded stock fees. Rates Paid The clerk. Mr F. I. Clarke, tabled a return or the rates struck and paid in the year 1 935- 3 y. covering the eight county ridings. Rates levied totalled £45.151 0s Bcl, of which £4 2,319 10s 3d had been received. The return showed that in the year 1938-39 the highest percentage or rates paid for th<> past six years had been recorded. in the. Norfolk Downs and Shaftesbury drainage districts 100 per cent of rates had been received Communications Thanking the council for its action in regard to the non-collec-tion of heavy traffic fees for farmers’ trucks was received from the Waltoa branch of the Farmers’ Union, and the South Auckland Dairy Association. GOLDFIELDB REVENUE Goldfields revenue amounting to £124 6s 6d was collected by the Clerk of the Warden’s Court in the first quarter of this year. The amount has been paid to the treasurer of the Te Aroha Borough Council. MOKENA GEYSER IMPROVEMENTS An additional grant to cover the difference between the estimated cost and the amount of the tenders submitted for the construction of terraces, catchment basins and storage tanks for the Mokena Geyser has been made by the Government. RETURNED SOLDIERS ASSOCIATION’S ANNUAL MEETING PRESENTATION TO MEMBER Mr N. G. McLeod presided at the annual meeting or the Returned Soldiers’ Association. The annual report stated that the roll stood at 189, compared with GO seven years ago. The Waikato Hospital Board scheme Tor hospital benefits for members and their dependents had been of considerable advantage to several members during the year. The balance-sheet showed the association to be in a sound position. The balance at the bank was £{ more than last year, while the assets totalled £IM 135 10 s. During the meeting one or the members. Constable A. E. Hinton, was presented bv the president. Mr N. G. McLeod, on behalf of the members, with a fountain pen, appreciation or his services to the association being expressed. MAGISTRATE’S COURT FIGURES In the first quarter or the year, 38 persons appeared in the je Aroha Police Court. or that number eight were arresten and the remainder appeared on summons. In the Civil Court plaints were issued Tor claims totalling £3i2 4s 2d. of which £3 29 8s Sd was recovered. Fines and costs imposed totalled £42 18s, and civil fees collected amounted to £37 13s.
