TOWN HALL SITE

FRANKTON’S CLAIMS

SPOIL FROM GARDEN PLACE FUTURE OF THE BOROUGH The claims of Frankton for consideration as regards the distribution ui the spoil from Garden Place liiil and the location of the proposed town hall were outlined by a Frankton business man, when interviewed by a Waikato Times reporter to-day. Faith in the future of Frankton was expressed by the speaker who stated that as time went by the centre would become more and more important in the social and commercial life of the borough. "Undoubtedly Hamilton will continue to grow, anil it is logical to presume that it will spread towards Frankton until the two are completely linked into one large business area,” said the speaker. “Some people may regard me as an optimist hut 1 am sure that at present Hamilton's progress is only in its infancy. The fact that a great deal of building has been carried out at Maeroa and other surrounding districts (gives promise of a very bright future for Frankton and establishes its claims for more consideration. "It is often stated by the authorities that it is desirable for a town hall to be as near as possible to the centre of the town, and that for this reason the Garden Place site had been chosen,” continued the speaker. ‘However,” if in the future the two business areas become one there could be no better site for the civic centre than Boyes Park. The layout is such that there would be adequate parking accommodation to cope with the advances of the town, while the situation is handy to both Hamilton and Frankton. Surely the people of Hamilton will be sufficiently farsighted to realise that by building their town hall between Frankton and Hamilton they will he working in the heat interests of future generations. Formation of Beach “With regard to the dumping of the Garden Place spoil, I have always felt that it would be desirable to use some of it for the construction of a bathing beach on the Frankton side of the Lake,” said the speaker. "There, in close proximity to the town we have one of the finest recreational assets the people could wish for, but we arc using only half of it. The section being used for bathing is less centrally situated than the Frankton end, which has the added advantage that it is completely sheltered from the prevailing wind. "Surely the construction of a public asset of this nature, while lange amounts of spoil are available, would be better than the reclaiming of a few sections of land. The latter could be carried out with smaller amounts of spoil as they came to hand, but to be done properly the proposal at the lake would have to be taken In one bite. Generations in the future would certainly give thanks to the Borough Council for the construction of a beach at this end of the lake.”

tient voices: "That this representative meeting of Auckland citizens urges upon the Government the immediate necessity for the inauguration of a national register with the object of universal service in one of the three branches now available; the territorial forces, the Legion of Frontiersmen and similar organisations, and the women’s division of the Citizens’ llorne Defence.” AID TO RECRUITING OTAGO SUGGESTION (By Telegraph.—Press Association) DUNEDIN, Monday The following resolution was carried at the annual meeting of the Territorial Association of Otago: "While appreciating the response of recruits to local units, this meeting is of the opinion that the international situation .justifies the Government in reinstating the New Zealand defence forces to the 1911 basis of organisation of units, and urges the Minister of Defence favourably to consider the recruiting of old units up to pre-war establishment. "It is of the opinion that such action would largely assist the recruiting campaign and would encourage officers and other ranks in the service they render to the State.”
