FINE FIELDS AT ELLERSLIE

BEAUPARTIR AND SULEIMAN FANCIES IN CHIEF HANDICAP ATTRACTIONS IN OTHER CENTRES (By “Martian” )

Racing and trotting Easter programmes will be observed in the ▼anous centres on Saturday and Monday, chief interest in the Waikato being in the Auckland Racing Club’s carnival and the Feilding Jockey Club’s meeting, at which local horses are engaged. At Ellerslie the chief attraction of opening day is the Easter Handicap, which this year has drawn a particularly fine field. Throughout, the programme is a comprehensive one and with win and place betting again in operation the picturesque Ellerslie course should draw a large attendance. In addition to the Feilding meeting, there will be racing at Grevmouth, Riverton and in the Wairarapa while trotting programmes will be observed at Hawera and Addington.

Following Is a review of Saturday’s fields at Ellerslie:— 11.67

PRESIDENT’S HANDICAP Of £150; li miles

Valamito has been working pleasingly in his preparation. He promises to strip a fit horse on Saturday and can be relied upon for a sterling- effort. With the promise of a firm track the credentials of Master Brierly will not be overlooked. He won convincingly on the latter day at Te Aroha over this distance and while he has subsequently failed at Pukekohe and Paeroa he will need only to be himself nn the day to be bard to beat. Galilee has been racing with a consist-

ency that commends her claims, while the latest form of Te Hai suggests early retribution. Balinavar was imrressive on the first day at Tan ran ga and handily placed with 7.1-3 will be assured of a strong following. Entail accounted for Peerless and Gay Son at Manawatu and reads the logical favourite. De Friend is a likely improver, while among the light-weight division a combination to appeal are Black Musk, Sergia and Coronation. There are others, too, on the minimum, with a chance hut at this stage it would appear that the best supported may he—

ENTAIL BALINAVAR VALAMITO

First Gold Money has shown promise on occasions but there are others that will no doubt be preferred. Gay Opal has disclosed little form to commend her and Homily should account for her. She has disclosed useful form this season and is the type of likely improver capable of running out the full distance. Kathbella has been racing solidly, her successes this term being all over sprint distances. She has yet to be tried over a distance, of course, but her stout breed-

ing lines suggest she will go the journey. Maxam is speedy, but Peerless appeals over the majority of the field. Tn addition to winning the Riccarton classic. Peerless has been third to Defaulter and Beaupartir in both Derbies and further has won good handicap events, one of her outstanding efforts being her defeat of Royal Chief in the Autumn Handicap at Trentham. Sudan has proved herself over a distance, annexing the North Island Hack Plate at her last appearance. Valdene has won up to nine furlongs and will add interest to a fine contest in which preference may b f: shown for— PEERLESS SI D \\ VALDENE

STANSTED MIA ACREA ELECTRIC SPEAR

Electric Spear is a fine jumper and his recent consistency points to his proving one of the hardest to beat. Full of Scotch, a brilliant performer over the obstacles last season, appeal's to be coming right again and his prospects will be enhanced in the event of rain. Riotous and En Tour should be held safe by SLanstcd and Mia Acrea. The former is a fine stayer and has been shaping well in his trials, while Mia Acrea, a young hurdler who won at his last start at Paeroa, makes strong appeal with 10.1. Celtic Lad and Inness Lad will have their measure of support, while Mio Lume, who won at Te Rapa in convincing style, will keep the opposition fully up to it although he might be preferred more on & yielding track. It is a fairly open race with preference likely to be shown—

The Easter Handicap of 1939 has drawn one of the finest fields for some years and indications are fancies will assume a generous r&mge. That fine performer Round Up is capable of a solid effort but may find a mile a little short to show to best advantage. Third last year, Llangollen is an improved mare this term and her fine record over all distances Justly entitles her to a position among the favourites. On the same mark, Suleiman has an imposing record in his four starts this season, having won

on three occasions and run second, unluckily, on the other. With his early brilliance he looks a fine proposition for major honours at the carnival. The Awapuni Gold Cup achievement of Beaupartir gives the three-year-old a great chance and he should see the distance right out. Gay Son appears to be coming back to his best and should beat the majority. Hot Box drew attention to his improved condition by his encouraging form at Te Aroha and the fact that he has been working well will increase his circle of admirers. Laughing Lass, Race Call and Golden Sheila are all handily placed. Rulette is a prospect and Royevrus, if started, will command respect. Further down are likely light-weight contenders in Pirate King. Galilee, Gold Vaals, Ivar, nnd Royal Bachelor and while the state of the track may cause a revision of ideas present indications point to favouritism being divided among— BEAUPARTIR SULEIMANGAY SON 2.57 GREAT NORTHERN CHAMPAGNE STAKES or £600; two-year-olds; colts and geldings, 8.10; nines, s.B; 6 Tur. st. lb. st. lb. Beau Repaire ran two fine races at Ellerslie »>ver Christmas for a first and second and produced fit and well he must have an undeniable chance. Fils de Vaals has disclose*} useful form and llunto is capable of a better showing than his Tauranga effort would suggest. Orelio has been doing well on the tracks and Silver Stick, Konnetta and La Vie have all indicated in their races that they have claims to consideration. Nora Gregor has been racing prominently and under

Hanover is a proved performer over country and as he won over hurdles recently at Awapuni he should strip a fit horse on the day. Desert Star, since filling the role of runner-up to Don Erma at Paeroa. has gone on the right way in his preparation and will

command respect. Count Rousillon is a likely improver as also is Baldric, who has been schooling well in recent weeks. British Sovereign should be all the better for recent racing and if rain intervenes his prospects will be enhanced. Siwell may be the best of the others in a race in which the prime fancies may be—

HANOVER DESERT STAR BRITISH SOVEREIGN

Endorsement has shown fair form in the South but Brazen Bold’s recent consistent running will give him preference. A record of two wins and a second in his last three starts provides the right credentials. Sir Lysander won well at Pukekohe but his subsequent form at Paeroa was disappointing. Surmise appears to be on the upgrade while Esquire, too, oomes within the same category. Either is likely to surprise. Gay Movie and Glen Connell are possibilities, while. Wyndora wo-uld need only to reproduce her track promise to take a hand in the finish. Pern will have a following and the promise of Constant Star at Paeroa points to her showing to advantage especially as racing should have improved her. Of the balance the pick may be Gold Wings and Lady Bambury. The final figures may point to— BRAZEN BOLD PERN WYNDORA

Luck in the running may have a bearing on the result in the big field engaged. Inquisitor's winning form at Te Aroha and subsequent running at Awapuni points to his claims. Mintlaw, too, has the right credentials. A winner at Matamata and Te Aroha. arid runner-up on either day at Paeroa, he is sure to give a solid account of himself. Melvanui and Eastern Heir have been working well and the winning form of Bnnstar at Paeroa will ensure him a solid hacking. Hutana is on the upgrade as also is VHement, who put up a good performance to win at. Paeroa. Further down likely sorts in Beeswing. Gamos. Son of the Foil. Summary and Devon will claim their measure of support in a splendid betting race in which the public may place most reliance on the chancesof — MTNTLAW VIT EM ENT BONSTAR ELLERSLIE RIDERS Riding engagements for Ellerslie include:— A. solid weights and she appeals among the fillies. Submission, however, would • ppear to have better credentials , er recent success at Awapuni has , ■rought her into prominence.
