POPULAR OUTING

RAILWAY PICNIC ALMOST 1500 EXCURSIONISTS VISIT TO MOUNT MAUNGANUI On Sunday a train excursion to Mount Maunganui, Tauranga, was organised by the committee of the ’Frankton Junction railway employees, and over 1500 attended. The outstanding success of the function was due to the energetic efforts of the committee, which was as follows: Messrs R. Longshaw, T. Skifflngton, W. George, A. Ward, R. Hamilton, L. Webb, L. Mathie, N. McArthur, E. Haines, W. Bradford, E. Roberts and G. Appleton. All arrangements were carried out smoothly, due to the efficiency of the secretary-organiser, Mr J. V 7. Kenworthy, assisted by Mr C. Craig. Messrs A. Ward, G. Appleton and N. McArthur comprised the entertainment committee. The children were well entertained, loe-cream, sweets and fruit were provided free and In addition every child received a free toy and comic cuts. Adults were supplied with several competitions in the souvenir programme issued to every passenger. Much pleasure was also derived from “mystery-bags.” During the afternoon most of the excursionists enjoyed themselves surfing. A life-saving display was given by several clubs, including Kare Kare and Waihi, and organised games and sports were held on the beach. The Frankton Railway Division of the St. John Anibulanoe competed In team work and their display was followed with great interest. Results of Competitions The following are results of the sports and competitions:— Railwayman's "Old Buffers" race: W. Doyle 1, T. Moody 2, George Friend 3. Married women’s race: Mrs Shipp I, Mrs Corcoran 2, Mrs Barnstull 3. Passenger guess: J. Savage 1. Jumbled station: T. Gawn 1, V. King 2, I. McCowell 3. Lucky seat: Mrs R. Hebditoh 1. Theatre competition: V. St. George and Mrs L. Webb 1, W. Park and V. King 2, F. Kiddell and R. Toot 3. Roxy letter: Mrs Gawn 1, Mrs L. Webb 2, Miss V. King 3. Bathing beauty parade: Miss Hodgkinson 1, Miss I. Carswell 2. Mr J. Stewart, stationmaster at Frankton. presented a cup to the Railway Division of the St. John Ambulance. Other trophies were presented by Mr A. Edwards. The Hamilton Citizens’ Band enlivened proceedings with popular numbers.
