AMATEUR ATHLETICS

MORRINSYILLE FIXTURE RESULTB OF SATURDAY’S EVENTS HONOURS WELL DISTRIBUTED (Special to Times) MORRINSYILLE Sunday Enthusiasm for amateur athletics which has been so evident in South Auckland country districts this season was reflected In the popularity of the initial venture of the Morrinsville Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club on Saturday when athletes from all parts of the Auckland Province were seen in action. The Morrinsville club was formed at the end of last year as a result of the interest in athletics and cycling aroused in the district by the construction two years ago of a banked pumice sand cycling track at the Morrinsville Recreation Ground. This track has already been the scene of important professional sports meetings, and now the Morrinsville district has a vigorous amateur club. Some promising sprinting talent ■was revealed in the members of the new' Paeroa and Morrinsville clubs. R. Davidson, a tall Morrinsville boy who was making his first appearance on a running track ran away from his field in the 100 yards open handicap to win his heat and final from the 7-yard mark. Davidson should he heard of more next season as the time of the final W'as 9.4-ss. Miss Joan Hart, of Morrinsville won the 120 yards ladies’ handicap easily from the 12 yards mark, and was also second in the 75 yards handicap. She Is still attending a primary school. The mile handicap run produced a remarkable finish which roused the spectators. W. J. Potter, of Matamata, made the pace throughout and when passed by I. Devcich of Paeroa, 300 yards from the post hung on gamely and came again in the straight, just managing to get up for a dead-heat at the tape. Both men outdistanced the re9t of the field, and the spectacle of a dead-heat in a mile race was appreciated by the crowd. Honours were well distributed in all events, the only competitor to win a double being M. C. Bridge a Hamilton cyclist who was first in the halfmile and mile open cycle handicaps. A splendid finish was witnessed In the three-mile cycle handicap. As the bunched field came round the bend into the long straight M. Cole, a Matamata rider, came fast round the top of the bank and shot past the men who had the inside running to win by a length after a great sprint to the post. Congratulations to the new Morrinsville club and a welcome to visiting athletes and officials were voiced by Mr J. M. Allen, M.P. for Hauraki, In remarks over the public address system. Mr Allen expressed the satisfaction of the people of the Morrinsville district at having present so many competitors from a distance, and the hope that they would be seen often on the Morrinsville track.
