Most of the bodies are still buried under tons of debris, constituting a grave menace to health.
Polluted water and the food shortage are causing widespread Illness and suffering.
Torrential rains have hampered resoue work, and added to the misery of the refugees.
The authorities have ordered the evaouation of the devastated cities, and the ruins are being dynamited and fired to prevent epidemics.
The earthquake struck suddenly without the usual tremors. RELIEF MEASURES BRITISH WARSHIPS ASSIST (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) LONDON, Jan. 28 The British Navy is aiding Chilean earthquake refugees. The cruiser Ajax is en route to Valparaiso from Talcahuano with 750 of them. The cruiser Exeter is returning to Talcahuano with 200 Chilean soldiers and a large stock of medical supplies.
