The Berlin correspondent” of the Times says the German press devotes columns to Barcelona’s fall, but shows a marked unwillingness to comment on the new situation in the Mediterranean created by General Franco’s success. Instead hopes are expressed that M. Daladier will not miss the opportunity for lesseninig Franco-Italian tension—presumably by yielding to Italian demands.

There is a concerted endeavour by the press to allay fears of new crises. The newspapers generally are not disposed to believe that the RomeBerlin axis is preparing to launch a joint diplomatic offensive, their Berlin correspondents stating that Herr Hitler is little disposed to become involved in Italian claims in the Mediterranean.
