GREETING THE NEW YEAR SPORTING ATTRACTIONS 810 EVENTS IN HAMILTON' With the New Year season conducive to relaxation from the routine of the year's work, Hamiltonians will be seeking - pleasure this week-end to greet the New Year. They will not have to travel far to find amusement for a variety of sporting attractions are offered in the town. A programme of cricket, tennis, bowling and athletics is scheduled for the week-end, while the hundreds of local residents interested in racing will have the attractions of the Auckland Haring Club's summer carnival to hold their attention. The biggest sporting event of the week-end locally will be the second challenge against Waikato this season for the Hawke Cup. when Marlborough will seek the cricket supremacy of minor associations in New Zealand. Waikato, fresh from the overwhelming victory against Bay of Plenty, should give followers of cricket an interesting week-end. while the fact that the challenging team is reputed to be a strong one should add greatly to the excitement of the match, which will be played at Soddrm Park tomorrow. Monday and Tuesday. Tennis Championships Tennis players In the Waikato and those Interested in the sport will be wed! catered for in the opening tomorrow of the Waikato lawn tennis championships. Well-known players will be contesting the titles, which will doubtless be keenly contested. On Monday a big programme of athletic and cycling events wiTl be held at a special sports canifval at Steele Park. Prominent athletes and some of the finest cyclists hi the North Island will be present to thrill the crowd. Monday will see the opening of the South Auckland bowling tournament at the Hamilton Club's greens-. This is an event of importance for bowlers tn the South Auckland area, and large entries should bring an influx of visiting bowlers to the town-. Many Hamiltonians are expected to visit Raglan for fhp regatta and carntvsrt. while others -wfn visit Te Arbha for fbe Caledonian sports.. Many champions will be seen in action at this meeting, which Is rapidly becoming one of the most prominent in the country.. Professional cyoHng racing, midget-car thrills, motor cycle races, clay-bird shook professional and amateur wrestling and competitive chopping are the main attractions on a programme filled with fntcrest.
