SOUTH AFRICA v. M.C.C. HOME TEAM FORCES POSITION GIBB AND PAYNTER BAT WELL (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) (Received Dec. 29, 3.15 p.m.) JOHANNESBURG, Dec. 28 The first test cricket match between South Africa and the M.C.C. ended today in a draw. Batting first the English team scored 422. to which South Africa replied with 390. In their second knock, commenced yesterday, M.C.C. lost one wicket for 103 at stumps, and when they continued today they reached 291 for four and declared. South Africa was determined to force a draw, and had lost one wicket for 108 when the match concluded. Gibb and Paynter both scored centuries for the M.C.C. After a quiet opening Gibb and Paynter became more aggressive. Gibb
reached his century in 184 minutes. Paynter took five minutes longer. Playing for a draw the South African batsmen declined to take any riks and the batting was very dull. Scores:— M.C.C.
