DUKE STREET WIDENING COMPLAINT OVER DELAY VOICED (Special to Times) CAMBRIDGE, Wednesday The monthly meeting- or the Cambridge Borough Council was held last evening. • when those present were the Mayor, Mr | Edgar James, Messrs A. H. Nicoll, M. j Wells, K. L. Wilkinson, IS’. R. Souter, W. 1 Moore, F. T. Roy (town clerk), W. McK. Jeffrey (engineer) and F. 11. Green (super- ; visor). A certified balance-sheet was returned from the Audit Department without any comments or tags attached. Reason Tor delays in connection with . the Duk' Street widening were explained ■ and IT. . information received from the ; Public Works Department, the work is i likely to be proceeded with in the near i future. The department stated that £3OO had been allowed on the Public Works Estimates Tor the widening or Duke Street and setting back the footpath. Delays had occurred owing to the illness of the surveyor who had the work in hand, but it was likely that the plans would be available in the near future. Mr Wilkinson expressed his regret that the survey work had been held up for over five months, without the council receiving any notification from the surveyor. The council decided to request an explanation. Hamilton Road Improvement The Public Works Department further advised that £3BO had been allowed on the estimates for the widening of the tarsealed portion of Hamilton Road by lirt. on each side from the Church of England, corner to Vogel street. The town clerk Mated that he had interviewed Mr Hall - Jones, the public Workengineer at Hamilton, who Intimated that hi' department was too busy to (lo the work at present. Centennial Suggestion In connection with the Auckland Centcn-i nial Committee’s suggestion that trees be ' planted on the mam highway between i Auckland and Rotorua, the council decided i to inform the committee that the matter I would he considered and further information forwarded later. The Cambridge Power Board presented i a scheme for improving the street lighting I in the borough.
