EXCITING FINISH
VEMELS ARRIVE AT SYDNEY AWATEA, MARIPOSA. WANGANELLA \ DELAYED BY HEAVY SEAS United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright. (Received June 14. 1 p.m.) SYDNEY, June 14 The Awatea arrived at 5.3 p.m. last evening, the Wanganeila at 3.10 p.m. and the Mariposa at 5.15 p.m. The three ships presented an impressive sight as they approached Sydney Heads almost in line. The full "force of the gale was met in the eastern half of the Tasman. Two of the Wanganella's women passengers fell down a gangway and received minor injuries. They refused to disclose their Identity. The Wanganeila. which left AVellIngton on Thursday night, and the Awatea. which cleared Auckland on Friday afternoon, were about nine hours behind their scheduled arrival. The Mariposa, which left Auckland on Friday night 5 hours 35 minutes after the Awatea. arrived about seven hours later than expectedThe Awatea, AVanganella and Mari(Wsa. when sighted through the haze, were almost in a line, but the Awatea drew ahead and won an exciting race to be first to enter the harbour. The Wanganeila was second, but the Mariposa was gaining on her fast at the -Cnfsh.” Captain Davey said the Awatea encountered a whole gale*’ on Saturday and Sunday, and the \essH was unable to make more than nine knots at one period.
