Making of a Nation “It is not the rewards you get, the posts or the positions, the tinsel, the glitter, or the shine,” writes General Smuts in the Star, Johannesburg. “What counts is the opportunity you get to prove what is in you and to do service to your fellow men to the best of your ability. In these forty years I have seen South Africa pass from the extreme of despair to the extreme of hope of forward-look-ing, unity, and all those things which make for strength and courage in the life of a nation. That is what has given me hope and faith in the future, not only of this country, but of the world. We are following the better way, and we are following it to the great blessing of South Africa. You may take it from me that all over the world thoughtful people have for years looked at South Africa and wondered, and said, ‘ls it not a wonderful thing that in this young country, where English and Dutch have been fighting each othei' for a century, they have been able to make peace?’ Thoughtful people hove been watching this national experiment of ours.
