WAIKATO DEFEATED MATCH WITH AUCKLAND MISS M. BEVERLEY BEATEN (By Telegraph.—Special to Times.> AUCKLAND, Sunday Although Waikato did not have its strongest team available when the annual match between Auckland and Waikato Tennis Associations was played at Stanley Street, yesterday the visitors did very well to lose by the narrow margin of 10 games to 7. F. Jenkinson and D. Livingstone (Waikato's two strongest players) were absent but the feature of the play was the defeat of the Misses Beverleys in their singles. In the women’s singles Nessie Beverley was not playing well, miss-hitting and over-hitting all through. Miss Cooke showed the benefit of her trip to Australia. Her foreha?; 1 driving was accurate and came off the ground at a great pace. Her court craft and position had improved out of all knowledge, and the game was one-sided in her favour. The general tenor of tiie game was baseline driving. Pam Cooke’s smashing had improved considerably, and she took a well deserved victory. Miss M. Beverley and Miss B. Bishop met on courts that were dry, with poor bouncing. This was against good play. Miss Beverley hit hard in the’ first, set to win at 6—l. She went to 2 —l in the second set and appeared to have it all her own way, but slackened her pace and showed a distinct weakness in her backhand play, Miss Bishop coming in to the net. The Aucklander won a number of points by coming in in this fashion. Miss Bishop took five games in a row to win the set 6—2 and even the score. The last set was more even, with Miss Bishop hitting harder and showing superiority in service and backhand ! siiots. The bad courts were obviously troubling Miss Beverley, whose’ pace I again slackened, which allowed Miss Bishop to proceed <o 5 —3. The Waikato player took the next game and staved off a match point in the tenth Fame, before losing set and match at C—4. Results were:— Men’s Singles •T. Roach Waikato) beat W. E.
