AUTUMN The splendid Summer slowly yields To Autumn’s tender grace Ere Winter \ alks, arrayed in white To work its change on slope and height; The spirit, in this hallowed time May surely rest a space. The quiet Autumn mornings break In amber, rose and pearl; The brown streams flash w r hen dawn mist clears Through lace of fern, and rushes’ spears; The singing breeze sweeps down to set The drifting leaves a-svvirl. The noonday falls on painted woods As soft as longed for sleep, On velvet of the browning grass The soundless feet of wild things pass And Nature's hour of utter calm Is solemn, hashed and deep.
