It Is openly admitted that the Nazis have gained greater influence In the Cabinet than was at first apparent, PARIS, Feb, 16 Franoe regards the Austrian changes as one of the most decisive steps in the European situation, opening the way to German Influence in the Balkans. THE NEW CABINET THE CHANCELLOR’S POSITION I WEAKENED BY CHANGES | MAY NOT REMAIN IN OFFICE : (Received Feb. 17, 11.50 a.m.) LONDON, Feb. 16. The Germanophilc, Herr Schmidt, now wields the foreign affairs portfolio. freed from the control of Dr. Schuschnigg, who hitherto combined I the portfolio with the Chancellorship. ! Thus the appointments of Dr Inquart , and Herr Schmidt somewhat weaken the Chancellor's position. ’ Will Not Remain in Office 1 The British United Press correspondent, at Vienna says Dr Schuschnigg ! is not expected lo remain long in of- : lice. It is suggested that after the changes have been completed he will retire and allow someone more favourable to the Austrian-German deal to take control. Paradoxically Dr Schuschnigg, whose life’s ambition has been the restoration of the Hapsburgs, has been forced by circumstances to accept an agreement excluding the possibility of restoration for years. It is believed that Dr Schuschnigg agreed to changes which he disapproved in order to avoid disorders arising from the sudden resignation which was contemplated.
