FRUIT IMPORTING
STATE TO CONTROL REPORT FROM AUCKLAND MERCHANTS’ OBJECTION (Special to Times.s AUCKLAND, Friday Information from reliable sources here states that aa from April 1 next the Government will control the Importation of all fruit Into the Dominion and will distribute it to the prlnolpal wholesale firms. Auckland merchants consider that as a result they will lose 50 per cent of their trade. It is stated that the Government will not compensate the importers for loss of the importing business or for capital invested In the trade. The Government's proposal Is creating a hostile reception from local Importers, who consider it most unfair in view of the large sums they have spent in developing the import trade. One of the points of criticism is that the Government had arrived at its decision without consulting the interests involved. The merchants denied any -suggestion that fruit would be* any cheaper as a result of the change.
