SEMI-FINAL STAGES

WAIKATO TENNIS TOURNEY COOMBE BEATS SHARPE PLAY IN WOMEN’S SINGLES The semi-final stage was reached In several events at the annual championships of the Waikato Lawn Tennis Association, yesterday, when play was continued at the Bostrevor Street courts In hot an.l sultry weather. Coombe (Wellington was not impressive In defeating Sharpe in the men's singles and lie was missing badly at times. especially in his volleying. Hi*> wa* accurate but larked sting and the match as a whole was below championship standard. \ surprise in the men's singles was the elimination of Matusrlika by M. Andrews, whose slow game, coupled with e steady service, caused Matuschka to be inaccurate over the final stages. Miss N. Beverley’s Good Display Miss N. Beverley gave a good display against Miss Bishop to win the third set to love after losing the second 6-—4, when she had held the lead at 4—3. r*he held the advantage over her opponent practically throughout with u fine display of driving from the baseline. Apart from a period mid-way ir. the match her volleying was always sound, but »lic wa» inclined to falter overhead. None of the doubles games provided really first-class tennis, but Miss E. Plummer, of Wellington,, gave a fine display in the combined event, in which she and L. Roach lost to Miss M. Beverley and B. Dold. Among her best efforts were a number of remarkable recoveries from difficult angles. Miss M. Beverley was erratic and she and Dold were fortunate to get the decision al 7—5 In the final set. Sharpe and Miss Glennv (Hawke’s Bay, who surprised in the New Zealand championships by reaching the final, played steady tennis to defeat Matuschka and Miss Buckley, while, Coornbe and Miss N. Beverley combined effectively to win from Livingstone and Miss B. L. Bishop. Result* after going to press yesterday were:—
