SYDNEY CARNIVAL
THANKSGIVING SERVICES HARBOUR CRUISES SOME ADVERSE COMMENT United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright SYDNEY, Jan. 27 Although the chief pageant marking the Anniversary Celebrations has passed, the festivities will continue until April 25. The band competitions began this evening. The Anglican Church thanksgiving service was held to-night. On the harbour. about 7000 people cruised in five of the largest ferry boats and participated in the service, which, conducted by the Archbishop of Sydney. E*r. Mowll, was broadcast and amplified by loud-speakers. The Celebrations Committee to-day decided that it was not advisable to re-enact the landing of Governor Phillip. or to repeat yesterday's pageant, as had been intended. A considerable amount of adverse comment is appearing in the press, owing to the Australian athletes in yesterday's procession of Empire Games competitors being attired in civilian clothes. The consensus of opinion is that they should be fitted out with regulation blazers and hats, after the manner of the visiting competitors.
