MUST BE PRESERVED MR EDEN'S CONTENTIONS BEST INSTRUMENT YET DEVISED Catted Freis Assn.— Elec. Tel. Copjrr^t (Received Jan. 28. 3.15 pm.) GENEVA. Jan. 7 At a public meeting of the League Council IVIr Eden said the League could legitimately be proud of Its achievements but there could be no advantage In shutting their eyes to certain events, however regrettable, and however much they may deplore them. I By the defection of some of the more Important of its members the League was now faced with the fact that the area of co-operation was restricted and its ability to fulfil all the functions originally contemplated for It thereby reduced. After reiterating the principles upon which the League was founded, Mr Eden added that the British Government believed that true peace and orderly progress and prosperity could not be looked for in the world unless all nations co-operated on some system based upon those principles. For the moment he said, we must realise that in the present circumstances the League was not in a posi--lon to achieve all that was hoped for ut Britain believed that the League, despite Its limitations was the best Instrument that had yet been devised for giving effect to principle of International co-opera-tlon, and was, therefore, determined to keep It In existence and to give It her full eupport. Britain would welcome the cooperation of non members in the work of the League and did not regard her membership as preventing or hindering friendly relations with non-members. Britain was also resolved that the League should not become the home of any ideology, except that of peace nd international co-operation.
