An inspector, on calling at a girls’ school at Twickenham, -found a foreign baroness peeling potatoes in the kitchen. The mistress, Alice Leith, was lined £2 for harbouring an alien. It was alleged that she received foreign girls, who paid for their education and also did housework. The chairman remarked: “ She is , very lucky. We poor people in England cannot often get servants, even when we are willing to pay.
