SIRES IN THE WAIKATO.

| HUNTING SONG LEADS AGAIN. FOXBRIDGE AT CAMBRIDGE. SOME ATTRACTIVE PROPOSITIONS. Horse breeders In the Waikato now have a select range of choicely-bred sires to select for the mating of their mares. Half-a-century ago there were one or two of outstanding merit and at intervals since there have . been such horses as Spalpeen, Quin Abbev, King Lupin, Marcavis, Sylvite, ‘ Little England, Gay Shield, General Latour, Illumination and one or two others of lesser note, while at Morrinsville (and also at Te Rapa for a season or two) there were the imported horses, Day Comet and Archiestown. Now we have a fine array of fashionably-bred horses domiciled in the district, Hunting Son (who heads the winning sires list for the fifth occasion) and Baffles, at •Hillcrest, Hazrat, at Te Kapa, Foxhridge and Vermeer, at Pukekura, Cambridge. Beau Irish, at -Scotchman's Valley. Lysander and Survievv, at Frankton, Day Guide, at Te Kowhal, and Valkyrlan. at Matamata. Foxhridge (Foxlaw-Bridgemount) has already proved himself a sire of attractive stock and there is an increasingly keen demand for liis services. Last year Sir Charles Clifford sent two choicely-bred mares from Canterbury and this season he has booked three other mares, including Fracas and Wild Hind, to visit this fine sire. Another southern owner, Mrs Richmond, of Hastings, has arranged to send two mares to Foxhridge and indications are that the horse's list for the season will be full. A Fine Individual. Foxbridge Is a fine Individual and his yearlings still at “Trelawney" resemble him in good looks. There is a black colt from the Lucullus mare, Auriculus, that appeals as a future racing proposition, a hay filly out of Fantastic (and therefore a granddaughter of Persis, the dam of some fifteen winners), a filly half-sister to that good performer, Gay Blonde from Lady Marie), and a bay colt half-brother to Ammon Ra. Also in tlie paddock is a colt by the importer Beau Pere, recently sold to an Australian stud master. Of the five the one to make most appeal, however is Gay Blonde’s half-sister. There is plenty of staying blood in Foxbridge, liis sire Foxlaw being one of the greatest stayers in England for many years, and, being a son of the great Son-in-iaw (whose progeny won over £350,000) he Is well recommended, Bridgemount is a descendant of Pretty Polly, and is the dam of Cresta Run, winner of important races. Practically all the best horses in England are represented in the blood lines of Foxbridge. At the same establishment Vermeer (Solario —Pilgrim’s Rest) is an attractive sire, a rich chestnut in colour and only three-year-old. He is developing into a handsome stallion and his splendid blood lines will ensure him wide patronage during the present season. He Is a grandson of Gainsborough, whose blood is in great demand everywhere, while on his dam’s side he lias the St. Simon and Martagon blood—sufficient recommendation for most breeders. Incidentally Mr Otway was fortunate in securing Vermeer at the time lie did, for soon afterwards Midday Sun won the English Derby, and as that horse is closely related to Vermeer on both sides of the pedigree the “Trelawney” Stud seems to have been lucky to get him. Hazrat introduces new blood Into the Waikato breeding industry, for he is by the Sandstar horse Craig an Kran, winner in England of the Two Thousand Guineas, Eclipse Stakes, and St. James Palace Stakes, and over £15,000 in stakes. Sunstar was hv Amphion’s son Sundridge and the dam of Hazrat was by the John of Gaunt horse, Swvnford, from Dark Flight, a grand-daughter of flic Roseerucian mare Illuminata, the ancestress of Night, Raid (sire of Pliar Lap) and Rossendale. Hazrat raced with success in England and Australia and he has two-year-old and thrce-year-old representatives racing successfully in New South Wales. Hunting Song’s Success. For the fifth successive season Hunting Song, with winners of close on £16,000, Is the leading sire of the Dominion and If he again tops the list next year he will equal the record of Martian In New Zealand. His achievement during the present season has been all the more noteworthy In that none of his progeny secured an outstanding place among the winners, although he has been represented by such outstanding gallopers a 9 Pink Coat, Sporting Blood, Hunting Cry, Galne Carrington, Stretto and View Halloo, and Jumpers of the ability of Huntlque and Alladdln. Performers who helped to compile Hunting Song’s record during the raring year included the following:- - Black Frost, Clarion Call. Cyclonic! En Vidette. Fossicker, First Chapter, Gaelic Song, Gay Hunter. Happy Hunting. Hunting Go. Hunter’s Morn. Hunting Lodge, Hunfing Mars, Huntingmore, Hunting Queen. Hunting Spy, Hunting Star, Jaybird, Jazz Kinc. Jubilee Song, Kentucky Song, Knock(Conttnued In next column.)
