HOT AND BOILING WATER VARIOUS TYPES OF “STARKIE” ELECTRIC HEATERS

highly specialised product and “the right heater for every purpose” is not just an empty phrase. Among the “Starkie” domestic types an ideal heater is that which gives a thoroughly reliable hot water service to bath, basin, sink and washtub, at the same time giving a subsidiary supply of water that is actually boiling. Thus, for teamaking and the hundred-and-one other daily requirements in the home, the time and cost of repeatedly heating up the kettle are saved. A feature of this boiling water convenience is that the water is always freshly boiled, not stewed. This is ensured by an efficient circulating system. Among other special types of “Starkie” heaters is the electric washing boiler. This is a big advance over the old-style bricked-in copper, and means a much tidier laundry as well as a much easier washing-day for the housewife. But, no matter what the hot water requirements may be, the “Starkie” electric systems have so long passed the experimental stage that the only considerations to-day are the type and size to install. A home convenience that is highly valued by the modern housewife is a good hot water service. Within comparatively recent years wonderful advances have been made in this direction and “hot water laid on” should be part and parcel of the equipment of every residence. Those of us who can recall the water-heating methods in force at the beginning of this century will recall that the kettle and pot on the stove were the chief sources of supply. Coal ranges had hot water tanks adjoining the firebox, but securing large quantities of hot water for the bath usually meant heating up the washing copper. Subsequently the kitchen range gave us the hot water service laid on to the taps—the first real step toward hot water convenience—and now electricity is more, and more called upon to do this work for us. Electric water heaters have undergone rapid improvement and to-day the architect, builder and property owner have a variety of types which answer every need. We have grown to regard the hot water supply as a service virtually as constant and dependable as the cold water supply. In the up-to-date home hot water is there ‘when you want it.” There is no waiting, and there are no preliminaries to be attended to. Electric water heaters do their work so silently and efficiently that, whilst one appreciates their convenience, one gives little thought to the heater itself. But, obviously, the production of an efficient heater is not just a matter of fitting an electric element to a water cylinder. This was but the first stage of the development of the electric water heater —very quickly it was found that it was not a matter of designing one good water heater, but a variety of good water heaters. To-day, for example, there are actually 11 types of electric water heaters produced under the well-known name of “ Starkie.” Why this variety? Because in some cases quick “ recovery ” is to be ensured. In other cases lime and other deposits in water have to be guarded against; in other cases boiling water is required as well as hot. There is also a heater that delivers boiling water only (a blessing on farms). And what of hotels and restaurants? Special requirements arise once more; hence there are heaters delivering boiling water and complete with coffee and soup urns and pie ovens. It will thus be seen that the electric water heater is a
