Santoft’s Career. Santoft had three owners (besides his breeder) before lie came to Washdyke imi for them he won only £I is 10s. In Hie colours of Mr J. Avenell Santoft made his dehut as a two-year-ohl. lie started ten times for two thirds and won £7. In the following season he was produced twice and was unplaced. As a four-year-old, in the ownership of Mr it. K. Simpson, Santoft won two Bracelet Handicaps in three starts. » Next season during which lie was secured by Mr <’. Hoyle, lie faced the starter eight times, winning another Bracelet, while as a six-year-old, when lie had six starts, lie won a similar race. Santoft’s first race in the present season. when he ran third in tlie Trial Hurdles at Hiecarton. was his last in the colours of Mr Boyle, for on the same day lie was sold to Messrs drhell. who handed him to F. Trilford to train, and did not start him again at the meeting. lie won hurdle races at (leraldine in September and at Mirearlon in November, then the (’.real Western, and. lastly, the Wellington 6»*--r»i« c hase.

Deserted Tracks. The tracks at Te Rapa are hearing a deserted appearance and yesterday the only pair to be sent against the watch was Shining Spear (H. Ferguson) and Free Advice (Tilsley), the latter doing the better of the pair at the completion of the effort. Master Musk Lame. Master Musk was to have been taken south by D. O’Connor for the National meeting, but the gelding was lame after the Winter Hurdles and the trip was cancelled. O’Connor took charge of Tudor for Mr B. Brewer and will prepare him for Grand National engagements. Tavern Song. Tavern Song has been recommissioned after a spell and has come in again in good fettle to commence a further preparation. This hack has run some good races under .T. F. Tutchen’s guidance and should add to his record in the coming term. Not Going South. Black Marlin performed much below his best in his two starts at. Wellington, and although Lord Val ran well, R. S. Bagby has taken them back to Ellerslie. and they will not be raced at the Grand National meeting. Two-year-old by Vaals. Rhodesian, who was raced at Trentham, is a two-year-old by Vaals from Mint Belle. He is trained by 11. Batten, at Feilding, and at the Otaki meeting in May lie won the Waikanae Scurry by five lengths, but had not raced in the interim. Better This Year. Clarion Call was not asked lo race again after the Trenlham Hurdles, and he will, therefore come up fresher for Riccarton. He ran second to Jolly Beggar last year and should have an excellent chance again. Etliiop also may do better on top of the ground. Future Looks Bright. Owing to the fact that he has no near engagements, Gay Broney is only doing light tasks at present. By finishing second to ColPsion in the Penrose Hurdles at Ellerslie last month the form displayed by Gay Broney was very encouraging. If his hurdle career is continued next season a good future looks assured for the son of Kilbroney.

Plans For Curlew. Curlew has been schooled pleasingly at Te Rapa and, while nothing of a definite nature has as yet been decided upon, he may be taken down to Gisborne to contest steeplechase i vents at the Poverty Bay Turf Club’s meeting towards the end of the present month. Yesterday Curlew was schooled over two (lights of hurdles in company with Te Whiowhio, both handling their task in approved style. Armacourt. It was intended to take the Auckland mare Armacourt to Trentham for the Wellington and Grand National meetings but the trip had to be abandoned owing to fhe ill-health of her owner, Mr C. Bishop. The daughter of Grandcourt is being kept going by H. Nesbit, but is unlikely to race again until the spring. Progress of Greek Shepherd. Reports from Riccarton state that Greek Shepherd is Improving each week and recently went well in a gallop over six furlongs. He Is gradually fining down, and the most pleasing feature concerning his preparation is the fact that he is showing no signs of unsoundness. If this horse trains on as at present he will be seen In action at the Grand National meeting next month. Travelling Agent. Travelling Agent is being used as a stock horse round the district at present it being the hope of the horse’s connections that this will serve to effect. solidness in his general condition and rectify any weakness that may be st 11 apparent in the affected leg that tins periodically caused his retirement from the active list. When right Travelling Agent is a fine performer over the obstacles and it. is to be hoped that this fine jumper will come right again. Cometarium. « Cometarium, the promising maiden in \V. K. Gockbill’s stable, who was injured rather severely when he collided with another horse during his preliminary at the Ohinemurl Jockey (hull's annual meeting at Paeroa, In March, is in steady work again and appears to have thrown off any ill effects of the mishap, which at the time was considered of such a serious nature as to spell finis to his career. However, it is gratifying to note that the Surveyor—Lady Comet three-yoar-okl lias come right again and that the patient policy of W. E. Cockbill is bearing fruit.
