EDUCATION EVILS

VISITORS’ FRANK COMMENT LACK OF CO-ORDINATION. SEGREGATION OPPOSED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Thursday. “As I see it the trinity of evils In New Zealand schools Is segregation of boys and girls, examinations and the system of inspectors,” said Professor F. W. Hart, of the University of California, interviewed to-day. “We hold that the chief purpose of education is the adjustment of children to the normal life situation and we think that the normal situation is for boys and girls to be educated together. The reorganisation of the New Zealand education system is advocated in an interview by Dr. William Boyd, of Glasgow, lie said the day of centralisation alone had passed and that a belter system of local schools control would have to be devised. Tne central department and llie local schools authorities should work together. “Thero Is a shocking lack of co-ordination of primary and secondary education,” he said. New Zealand has got to make up its mind to spend more on education. Salaries are shocking and you never get good men to teach unless you are willing to pay more.”

At the conclusion of the principal lecture in the Town Hall to-day an Auckland group of the Education Fellowship was enthusiastically formed and a -provisional committee was appointed.
