LEGISLATOR’S DEATH.
THE HON. Q. W. RUSSELL. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Monday. The death occurred of the Hon. G. W. Russell to-day at Eastbourne, Wellington. Mr Russell was a member of the MacKenzle and National Ministries, M.P. for Riccarton from 1893 to 1896 and from 1899 to 1902 and M.P. for Avon from 1908 to 1919. The Hon. George Warren Russell, was born in London in 1854 and was educated in Tasmania. He entered Journalism on the Wellington Evening Post and was sub-editor of the Wanganui Chronicle in 1878. He established the Manawatu Herald and later bought the Waikato News at Cambridge. In 1889 Mr Russell moved to Christchurch and established a printing business. He served on several educational bodies and was president, of the New Zealand Educational Conference in 1905.
In 1912 he was appointed Minister of Internal Affairs and Health and held similar portfolios with 1 lie National Government during Hie war. Between 1915 and 1919 he was also Minister of Marine.
