ILLICIT LIQUOR.
SALE TO MAORIS. HINDU IMPRISONED. KAWHIA, Saturday, j Bhagvanji Desai (36), a Hindu storekeeper at Taharoa, was convicted and sentenced to 21 days’ imprisonment by Mr S. L. Paterson, S.M., for •' the illicit sale of liquor In a proclaimed area. Desai, who was previously convicted for a similar offence, was described by the magistrate as “ a menace to the community.” The police stated that Desai made a practice of visiting native gatherings with supplies of liquor, and many complaints had been made regarding him. At Easter he had visited a large cathering at Otorohanga, and had been ordered by the pa committee to leave. I OASES AT ASHBURTON. ASHBURTON, Saturday. Edward O’Connor was convicted and fined £lO for sly grog-dealing. The magistrate intimated that In view of I lie prevalence of the offence in future penalties would be gaol without the option of a fine. James Francis Cornwall, a farm worker, was fined 30s and costs for supplying his son (18) with Intoxicating liquor. The offence ooourred on the racecourse. The charges against the barman and the catering firm were dismissed. The evidence showed that the father purchased the. liquor and gave it to his son, the other defendants not knowing for whom It was intended.
