TE AROHA NOTES.

PLANS FOR KING REY. SUCCESS OF GAY ROSE. BLACK MUSK LOOKS WELL. (Special to Times.) TE AROHA, Saturday. Mrs R. Taylor’s Spear Dance —Miss Potoa gelding is showing improvement in his track work and will be making his appearance in public before the winter has far advanced. In due course he may develop into a hurdler of note, being of weight-carrying conformation, with the pedigree of a real stayer. Mr Gordon Wyborn is handling a nice quality filly by Captain Bunsby— Gold Beauty, a full sister to Drathold, in R. Barlow's stable in New Plymouth. Gold Beauty, by St. Amans—Shower Gold, Js a full-sister to Picture, the dam of the well-performed Gay Talkie, recently sold to an Indian sportsman. The latest addition to A. E. Cox’s team is a rising three-year-old bay filly by Spear Dance—Keep Watch, a half-sister to- Val Watch. J. 11. Wallace has commenced to work Gold of Gay on the local tracks. She is a four-year-old mare by Gay Shield from a full-sister to Valroe. Trainer Lipsey has taken in hand the rising two-year-old colt Wynardo, by The Ace—Wynette. He is especially well developed for his age and a typical thoroughbred of quality. King Musk is being wintered at E. A. Keesing’s stables. He is sound and will be re-commissioned In the near future.

King Rey, runner-up In the President’s Handicap at Te Rapa, is bright and well after his effort. He is to race in the Cornwall Handicap, in which he will meet his conqueror, Gay Rose, on 10 lbs. better terms. Gay Rose is still in splendid trim, and certainly none the worse for her Te Rapa racing. She fully bore out the opinion that she had never been in better condition. Many old-time sportsmen will be Interested to know that George Absblum, an Auckland trainer of over 20 ' years ago, of Waimangu, Santa Rosa, Tosginau,. Carl Rosa and many other winners in the Lennard ownership, has always had a high opinion of Gay Rose, owned by his brother-in-law, Mr A. E. Lennard, and was one of the most pleased sportsmen over her double victory. Requiem Improved. The Hunting Song filly, Requiem, Is Improved consequent upon her racing at Te Rapa, and may not be long in getting into the money. Like others by Hunting Song she gallops well on a dead track. Having sustained a slight sprain while working on a wet track, Seven Seas did not make his appearance at the Waikato meeting. He is still susceptible to improvement, but promise* to make good in due course. A probable competitor at the Opotikl meeting next month is the Musketoon mare, Miriana, trained by H. Eva, who has the mare in excellent condition. She has the element of gameness, and with ordinary luck should be prominent in her next racing essays. Black Musk is none the worse for his recent racing, and is likely to line up in the Jervois Handicap at Ellerslie next week, although not in any way leniently treated in the weights. It would appear that the Musketoon gelding gallops better on a comparatively firm track, preferably to yielding going. The winner of the Hunters’ Steeplechase at the Waikato fixture, St. Musk, was bred by Mr John McLaren, at Mangaiti. As a three-year-old he was trained by C. E. Mallowes, but showed very little galloping aptitude at that time. His owner, therefore, withdrew him from work and he returned to the dairy farm to enjoy his share of leisure. In due course be was taken up by a sportsman who soon found out the Mangaiti cast-off was a very bold and game jumper. This was amply proved at Te Rapa, where several Mangaiti “sports” were highly pleased at the victory registered by the light chestnut and the resultant remunerative dividend.
